JelloSlave with Janick Martin
After noticing their common view about music, cellists Jacqueline Ferrier-Ultan and Michelle Kinney have decided, four years ago, to form a duo where they could freely express their eclectic musical interests and, therefore, opened to any guest who might be helpful in the achievement of their ideas. Because if those two have of course grown up with a classical training, they've been able to avoid a very demanding genre which can become just a golden cage if you wish to get out the orchestra rows to go and taste the diverse sensations from other musical styles: jazz, rock, world music, etc.... That’s why one might have seen Michelle Kinney nearby jazz musicians like George Cartwright and Henry Threadgill or pop singers like Natalie Merchant and Sheryl Crow, while Ferrier-Ultan played with other jazzmen like Anthony Cox, Bill Carrothers and Didier Petit. And among other combinations, Jelloslave has chosen, on its own album, to switch from one style to another according to the compositions, and even to mix them inside one piece of music. Tabla player Gary Waryan and drummer Greg Schutte touring with Cindy Laper and part Jelloslave latest cd are completing the group. By inviting Breton accordion player Janick Martin, as comfortable with modern or traditional Celtic music as with improvised one, the teammates will demonstrate as much their wide range of musical inspirations as their ability to vary musical colors.
