Colin / Labarrière / King

Colin, a bass clarinet specialist, is becoming a familiar face in the Twin Cities having played and recorded here regularly over the past five years, with his trio and singer Gwen Matthews. Colin has also been able to share his inspiration with The Regional Trio of Anthony Cox. The upright bass player Hélène Labarrière, who has from a young age, established herself as a sidewoman with prestigious musicians such as Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Slide Hampton or Lee Konitz. She has then distinguished herself on the more modern and European grounds with the likes of Joachim Kuhn, Michel Portal, Marc Ducret, Yves Robert or Denis Colin and his nonet. Labarrière currently is widening her musical field to Britton and Celtic music by participating in the Jacky Molard Quartet. If Helene has always teamed with great drummers with appetite and enthusiasm (Sam Woodyard, Daniel Humair. Jack Dejohnette, Mark Sanders), Denis has a different relation to the drums. A one time member of the Celestrial Communication Orchestra 20 years ago, he had the chance to play with drummers such as Muhamad Ali or Noel McGhie. He then found his own way, developing his music with hand drum. But the beautiful old devil was still in him. Two years ago in Minnesota sur Seine, he talked with David King, a major figure of modern drums, about doing a duo "sometime", that duo becomes a trio tonight and what a trio!
