P. Brötzmann / M. Sanders / A. Cox
This entirely new trio is all about bringing generations together and passing down knowledge and history in the process. Peter Brötzmann, a German-born sax player and legendary figure in European free jazz, is among the European pioneers of this genre, along with Evan Parker, Alex Von Schlippenbach, Peter Kowald, Han Bennink and Derek Bailey. Brötzmann has a strong base in the United States with his ìChicago Tentet,î in which the Chicago scene is duly represented by, among others, saxophonists Ken Vandermark and Mars Williams and drummers Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake. If Brötzmann seems like a hero to his two younger colleagues, he very much remains a musician of sharing and will be sure to bring them along with him, behind his monumental sound, as they venture in toward tremendous sonic explorations. A sense of sharing that is also present with acoustic and electric bass player Anthony Cox, a former companion of Steve lacy, Ed Blackwell, Elvin Jones or Joe Lovano during his years among the New-York jazz scene where he was strongly looked after because of his qualities as a sideman or improviser. His warm acoustic bass sound and the density of his electric playing are also two other features that will allow him to perfectly set along with his two European partners, while Mark Sanders, a voluble and subtle drummer and long-time accomplice of Evan Parker, will have the opportunity to cross his British experience with that of the almost volcanic Brötzmann.
